Digital payments get boost this holiday shopping season

first_img 9SHARESShareShareSharePrintMailGooglePinterestDiggRedditStumbleuponDeliciousBufferTumblr It’s not surprising that TMG’s Thanksgiving holiday card transaction data indicate cardholders shopped both in-store and online throughout the holiday weekend. What we were surprised to discover was the significant jump in the number of card-not-present (CNP) sales compared to previous years. This year, CNP sales accounted for nearly a quarter of the total holiday weekend credit and debit card transactions TMG processed. In 2014, however, they accounted for 20 percent of all card transactions. In 2013, they accounted for 15 percent. That wasn’t the only record-breaking occurrence this holiday season. For the first time, we included both EMV and tokenized transactions in our holiday spending analysis. The objective of doing was to establish a benchmark in regard to mobile pay solutions, which continue to account for only a fraction of transactions across the industry. Here are a few of the key observations our product and digital teams made upon examination of the tokenized transaction data, which largely consisted of Apple Pay purchases.Cyber Monday was the most popular day in November for tokenized credit transactions; Black Friday for tokenized debit transactions. continue reading »last_img read more

More than a quarter of new QLD homes sell to foreign buyers: ANZ

first_imgCrowds attending the auction of a home in Brisbane. Picture: Peter Wallis.MORE than a quarter of new homes built in Queensland are being bought by foreign buyers, according to new research from one of Australia’s big four banks.Foreign investors are estimated to have bought between 11,000 and 18,000 homes in the state during the 2015/16 financial year, making up 10 to 15 per cent of total housing turnover. But the number is significantly higher when it comes to new homes, with foreign buyers purchasing between 25 and 45 per cent of newly-constructed dwellings in Queensland in that period, according to new research from ANZ Bank. GET THE LATEST REAL ESTATE NEWS DIRECT TO YOUR INBOX HERE ANZ research has found more than a quarter of new homes in Queensland sell to foreign buyers. And while some in the industry blame increased foreign activity as one reason why house prices in Sydney and Melbourne have soared in recent years, Mr Gradwell’s research suggests it may not be a major factor.“The relatively lower share of total market activity suggests that foreign buyers have not been the primary driver of the price growth in recent years,” he said.Nationally, ANZ estimates foreign buyers purchased between 35,000 and 60,000 homes in 2015/16, making up 7 to 13 per cent of total housing turnover during the period. HOUSING AFFORDABILITY IMPROVING Foreign demand for Queensland homes has increased. Photographer: Liam Kidston.Mr Gradwell said the size of foreign ownership of Australia’s housing stock was significant, but not large enough for ANZ to be concerned about a foreign exodus from the housing market.ANZ compiled the research using Foreign Investment Review Board data on approvals and recent estimates from the Reserve Bank of Australia.Mr Gradwell pointed out no one could say with any certainty as to what impact increased foreign investment has had on the housing market because there was no concrete data or stand-alone body to monitor activity beyond the building approval process.Credit Suisse released research in October, using revenue figures obtained from state governments under freedom of information requests, estimated fewer than one in 10 new homes in Queensland sold to foreign buyers. The investment bank estimates foreign investors pour $700 million into residential property in Queensland on an annual basis. But that’s a small proportion of the total value of Australian real estate, which is estimated to be $6.7 trillion nationally. ANZ research reveals an increase in demand for Australian homes from foreign buyers. Image: AFP/William West.ANZ senior economist Daniel Gradwell said foreign property purchases in Queensland had increased fivefold in five years, largely driven by Chinese nationals.“In Queensland, the vast majority of foreign approvals were for the construction of new dwellings — about 95 per cent — which probably suggests it’s heavily weighted in the apartment sector,” Mr Gradwell said. But Real Estate Institute of Queensland chief executive Antonia Mercorella said she was skeptical about the research and doubted foreigners were buying as much as 45 per cent of new homes in the state.“That seems unlikely to us from our experience at the coal face of selling real estate,” she said.“It is important to note that while China is the undoubtedly the largest proportion of our foreign buyers, the Chinese government recently put a ban in place on Chinese nationals buying overseas real estate so it’s unlikely these numbers reported in the ANZ report – if true – will continue.” GOOGLE SEARCH LANDS BUYER BIG DISCOUNT High rise apartment towers on the Gold Coast.More from newsParks and wildlife the new lust-haves post coronavirus22 hours agoNoosa’s best beachfront penthouse is about to hit the market22 hours agoMr Gradwell said the research showed there was a clear divergence between the impact of foreign buyers on dwelling prices and housing construction in Australia.“It’s clearly impacting the construction sector, which has helped the economy transition away from mining and support employment growth,” he said.“The sizeable foreign-buyer share of newly-constructed housing implies that foreign demand has been an important contributor to Australia’s recent construction boom.“If this demand were to dry up suddenly, Australia’s construction pipeline would likely be notably weaker than currently expected.” MORTGAGE STRESS IMPROVES IN QLD last_img read more

Tony Pulis sympathises with under-pressure managers

first_img Albion host Everton on Monday with the Toffees unbeaten in their last five games and the hosts having won seven points from their last nine. Everton manager Roberto Martinez managed to keep John Stones from joining Chelsea this summer while Pulis and Albion were able to ensure Saido Berahino stayed at The Hawthorns despite four bids from Tottenham. West Brom boss Tony Pulis has revealed his sympathy for under-pressure managers and believes they should stick together. Press Associationcenter_img Pulis admitted he empathised with Martinez’s situation and understands what other managers in the Barclays Premier League are going through, in all aspects of their job. He said: “Pressure is on you at times and you have to deal with it and handle it. “Then other times it’s not on you, it’s on someone else and you have great sympathy for other people because you know what they’re going through and what it’s all about it. “It’s a tough old job this one.” The Baggies took Midlands bragging rights with a 1-0 win over Aston Villa last week to clinch their third straight clean sheet in the Barclays Premier League. Albion have only conceded goals to Chelsea and Manchester City this term but Pulis, who will recall strikers Salomon Rondon and Berahino after resting them in the League Cup defeat at Norwich in midweek, believes they can now strike the right balance between defence and attack. He said: “We’ve played six games and have four clean sheets. The basis of what we work on and talk about the lads have been very good at. Against Aston Villa we looked like we would score goals. “We had looked threatening at times against Manchester City and Chelsea but without being really dominant in creating chances. Against Villa we should have scored more goals.” last_img read more

USC visits Oregon State in Pac-12 clash

first_imgThe USC men’s basketball team (10-10, 1-6 Pac-12) will travel to Corvallis, Ore. following one of their most promising weeks of Pac-12 play and take on the Oregon State Beavers (11-8, 3-4).Solid as a rock · Senior guard Pe’Shon Howard has averaged 10.1 points and a team-leading 4.1 assists per game while starting 20 of 21 games for the Trojans this season. Howard transferred from Maryland after the 2013 season. – Ralf Cheung | Daily TrojanHead coach Andy Enfield’s squad is coming off of a week that saw them pick up their first conference victory of the year, beating Cal in convincing fashion. The Trojans followed that up with a strong effort against the visiting Stanford Cardinal, keeping pace with them before eventually falling by 8 in overtime.Oregon State will be no tough task for the Trojans. The Beavers are 8-2 in their last 10 in Corvallis, and redshirt junior guard Roberto Nelson is leading the Pac-12 in scoring, with just more than 22 points a game.“This league is very good top to bottom,” Enfield said regarding the rigorous Pac-12 schedule.Though the Trojans have not been able to put all the pieces together in conference play, their effort is undoubtedly there. Last season the Trojans had similar struggles, losing five out of their first eight Pac-12 games. There seems to be a marked difference in the two squads despite what the similar records might suggest.Enfield’s team seems to put forth great effort every night, despite facing mounting struggles on the offensive end.“The guys have had great attitudes and they’ve been very enthusiastic,” he said. “I’m very proud of our players.”Though some of the younger players have struggled to find consistency this season, junior guard Byron Wesley has been a model of stability. Wesley comes into the game averaging 16.5 points and seven rebounds per contest. For his part, Wesley thinks the Trojans need to follow his lead and find some on-court steadiness.“We just need to stay consistent,” the Rancho Cucamonga, Calif. native said. “Look at the film, grow, see our flaws, see what we do well, and continue to practice hard and prepare like we’ve been preparing.”While Wesley’s stellar efforts will be required, he will certainly need some help to walk out with a win in Corvallis, something the Trojans have been unable to do in their last four road contests with the Beavers. Some of that help may come in the form of freshman forward Nikola Jovanovic, who entered the season as a low-profile recruit but has his coaches raving about his progress. For his efforts he has earned what seems to be a permanent place in the starting line-up, and his coach was clear when explaining why.“We’re 8-1 when Nikola scores in double figures,” Enfield said. “Hopefully he understands that.”Against California, Jovanovic certainly seemed to get that message, scoring a career-high 23 points while shooting a mind-boggling 80 percent from the field. Some of his better performances have made Trojan fans and national scouts alike forget that Jovanovic is only 18, but, luckily for Enfield, his growing stardom has not translated into any sense of entitlement.“It’s been awesome for me as a freshman,” Jovanovic said of his increased playing time. His teammates seem to appreciate Jovanovic as well.“Nikola is really talented,” Wesley said of his international teammate. “I’ve been really impressed with his work ethic.”Jovanovic, Wesley and the rest of the team will have to continue to work hard, as the schedule only gets tougher.Following the Oregon State game, the Trojans have a date in Eugene with the always talented Oregon Ducks. For now, however, USC will try to march into Corvallis and come out with their second conference win of the season.last_img read more

Solskjaer: It’s Brilliant to Be Back to Old Trafford

first_imgManchester United have named former player Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as caretaker manager until the end of the season, a day after sacking Jose Mourinho.Solskjaer spent 11 seasons at Old Trafford, scoring the winning goal in the 1999 Champions League final. The 45-year-old takes over with United sixth in the Premier League. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer excited by return to Old Trafford “Manchester United is in my heart and it’s brilliant to be coming back in this role,” said the Norwegian.“This is an opportunity I had to take.“I’m really looking forward to working with the very talented squad we have, the staff and everyone at the club.”Solskjaer, who earlier this month signed a new deal as manager of Norwegian club Molde, will be joined by Mike Phelan, who returns as first-team coach having previously worked alongside Sir Alex Ferguson.Michael Carrick and Kieran McKenna, both part of Mourinho’s coaching staff, will continue to work under Solskjaer.Solskjaer’s first match in charge will be against Cardiff – where he endured an ill-fated spell as manager – on Saturday. He was relegated from the Premier League with the Bluebirds during an eight-month spell as manager in 2014, then sacked after a poor start to the Championship campaign.United will look to appoint a permanent boss at the end of the season.“Ole is a club legend with huge experience, both on the pitch and in coaching roles,” said Ed Woodward, United’s executive vice-chairman.“His history at Manchester United means he lives and breathes the culture here and everyone at the club is delighted to have him and Mike Phelan back.“We are confident they will unite the players and the fans as we head into the second half of the season.”The club appeared to inadvertently announce his arrival 12 hours earlier, when a video featuring Solskjaer scoring the winner in the Champions League final against Bayern Munich in 1999 was briefly on their official website. It led to Norway’s Prime Minister Erna Solberg welcomed Solskjaer’s appointment on social media, writing: “Great day for Norwegian football. Good luck keeping control of the Red Devils.” She later deleted the tweet.Molde’s 2018 season has finished for the winter and does not restart until March.United’s statement announcing Solskjaer’s arrival as caretaker manager made no mention of whether or not he will return to Molde when the Premier League season ends. But the Norwegian club stressed they were only “lending” Solskjaer to United, indicating they expect him to return to his previous role.“This is a big opportunity for Molde FK, we think it will be developing and helping to put Molde further on the football card,” Oystein Neerland, the club’s chief executive officer, said.Solskjaer is in his second spell as Molde manager after returning to the club, little over a year after he was sacked by Cardiff, in October 2015.In his first spell, Solskjaer led the club to their first Norwegian title in 2011, going on to retain the trophy in the following season.Meanwhile, Mourinho has said that his career at the club is now a closed chapter following his sacking as manager a day earlier, but the Portuguese confirmed he would return to management.“Manchester United has a future without me and I have a future without United,” Mourinho told Sky Sports. “Why should I be sharing more now, even with the supporters, any of my feelings? It’s over. That’s the way I’ve always been.“I’ve been critical of managers that leave clubs and speak about what’s happened and who’s to blame. That’s not me. I just want to finish like it happened yesterday and I’d like to say it’s game over. I hope you media respect this way for me to be.“Until I get back to football I have my right to live my normal life. That’s what I want to do. United is the past.”Mourinho, who replaced Dutchman Louis van Gaal in May 2016, won the Europa League and League Cup in his first season. He then guided United to second place in the Premier League and the FA Cup final, where they were beaten by Chelsea, in his second.Yet his third season was riddled with problems both on and off the pitch, including the breakdown of his relationship with record signing Paul Pogba, before United pulled the plug with the team sitting sixth in the league.Mourinho’s final game in charge was a 3-1 defeat at bitter rivals Liverpool on Sunday.Share this:FacebookRedditTwitterPrintPinterestEmailWhatsAppSkypeLinkedInTumblrPocketTelegramlast_img read more
