LA PUENTE — Special teams and defense carried the Duarte High School football team to a 42-6 victory over Bassett High in a Montview League game on Friday night. The Falcons’ Corey Fluker ran two punts back for touchdowns and Duarte had another score on a kickoff return. The defense forced five turnovers and held Bassett to 207 yards. He had two interceptions. Fluker’s two punt returns in the fourth quarter broke open the game. His first touchdown return was 74 yards with 10:46 remaining in the game. It gave Duarte a commanding 28-6 lead. His second TD return came a little more than a minute later when he took the ball 77 yards downfield. Bassett’s only score came in the second quarter when Pena found Ruben Guardado for a 24-yard scoring pass. Duarte scored 42 points, but its offense scored only twice and racked up 214 yards. Duarte (5-1, 3-0) used some trickery to score on the game’s opening kickoff. Mashad Miller caught the kick at the 7-yard line. Three other Falcons huddled with him and Miller gave the ball to Jermaine Thomas.
