Exclusive – Burley slams Sterling, claiming Liverpool starlet needs to be tougher

first_imgCraig Burley has slammed Raheem Sterling’s decision to tell England manager Roy Hodgson he was tired ahead of the Euro 2016 qualifier with Estonia. The Liverpool star was left out of the starting XI after complaining of fatigue, as the Three Lions ran out 1-0 winners in Tallinn. And former Scotland star Burley claims the Reds flyer has shown a complete lack of respect.“I know 19 year olds get tired, I’m not arguing with that, but you don’t knock on your manager’s door in international football and say, ’I’m too tired’. They’d be nobody left to play if everyone did that,” he told the Sports Bar.“If he’s playing with an injury, it’s different, but he just said he was too tired and didn’t want to play. What’s all that about?“The majority of players come into games tired, it is part and parcel. If Liverpool were playing Real Madrid, or England were playing Brazil, do you think he would have gone to Roy Hodgson and said he was tired?“I’m 43 years old, not 76, but people will still say I’m ‘old school’. I’m not having it.“You do not turn up for international duty and tell your manager that you are tired.“I don’t care if you’re 19 or 30, I’m not buying it.“People will say he’s brave to have come and said it, but I’m not having it. He’s being wrapped up in cotton wool, it’s nonsense.”last_img read more
