Morocco Absent from Paris Conference on ISIS

Rabat- Morocco will not take part in a conference scheduled to be held in Paris on Monday to devise a strategy to destroy the Islamic State in Syria and Iraq (ISIS).The conference, which is being convened by French President, Francois Hollande, will be attended by 30 countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom, China, Russia, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, Oman, United Arab Emirates, Lebanon, and Jordan.The conference comes four days after the Jeddah meeting attended by the six Gulf countries, as well as Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, and Turkey in addition to the United States. Like other countries of the Maghreb, Morocco was not invited to participate in the Jeddah meeting. Following the meeting, the participating countries issued a communique in which they pledged to undertake the necessary “actions to combat terrorism, including stopping the flow of foreign fighters through neighboring countries, countering the financing of ISIS and other terrorist groups and repudiating jihadist ideology.”In addition, they agreed to “join in the many aspects of the coordinated military campaign against ISIS, as appropriate.”The Paris meeting will be followed by a Security Council meeting scheduled to be held on September 25 on the sidelines of the sixty-ninth session of the United Nations General Assembly. Former Eastern Province CM Pillayan arrested

He was shot dead in December 2005 at St. Mary’s co-cathedral church in the Batticaloa town while attending Christmas prayers.The MP’s wife, Mrs. Sugunam Pararajasingham sustained serious injuries in the gunfire while several others were also injured. Pillayan was part of the Karuna Amman led Tamil Makkal Viduthalai Pullikal (TMVP) at the time Pararajasingham was killed.The TMVP had split from the LTTE and fought against the LTTE but an internal rift in the TMVP say Pilayan and Karuna go their separate ways and in 2007 Pillayan was made leader of the TMVP.The TMVP contested the Eastern Provincial Council elections in 2008 and won and Pillayan was made Chief Minister. However human rights groups said that Pillayan should be investigated for the crimes he had committed as an LTTE member and as a TMVP fighter. (Colombo Gazette) Pillayan was arrested in connection to the murder of Joseph Pararajasingham, a senior Tamil politician and former Batticaloa district Member of Parliament (MP) of the Tamil National Alliance (TNA). Th former Government of Mahinda Rajapaksa used Pillayan to promote the idea of terrorist turned politician who entered democracy. Former Eastern Province Chief Minister Sivanesathirai Chandrakanthan alias Pillayan was arrested by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) today.Pillayan’s spokesman Azad Maulana said that the CID had gone to his house in Batticaloa last night with a warrant to arrest him. However he was not at home and as a result he visited the CID office today where he was arrested. read more
